Judith is an attractive girl, who will have nothing to do with young men who would court her. Her attitude towards them is due to the life she leads with her brother an idle gambler. It is his gambling that will lead Judith into danger, heartbreak and adventure.
Lawrence Sheridan newly arrived in town from his estate on Dartmoor, is the product of a family with a dark past, a past which has had made him bitter and self seeking. When he meets Judith she imeadiately fires his interest and he plans to have her to himself for one long cold snowbound winter on the moors.
