Risky (Adventures in Love)

“I love you too.” He presses his forehead against mine, and I close my eyes. “You and Sam, I love both of you so fucking much.” Oh God, I’m going to cry. I latch onto him with both hands.

“We love you, too,” I say, whispering the truth as I look into his beautiful eyes;

“I should have fucking pretended to get lost coming back from Mav’s cabin,” Blake whispers under his breath as he shifts on his chair.

“Too late,” I whisper back, resting my hand on his thigh while watching Sandy, his grandma, and Lance, her boyfriend, who are seated across the table from us

“What part of you did she threaten to cut off if that didn’t happen?” I ask, and he grimaces. “If it makes you feel any better”—I pat
his thigh—“she hates blood and would probably throw up and pass out before causing any real harm.”

“Being with you feels right,” I say, interrupting again before she can finish, because no way do I want to even think about this ending up any other way but with us together. “I haven’t felt this content since . . .” Fuck, never. I’ve never felt this. “I don’t know that I’ve ever
felt this content. I want this to work. I want more days just like this with you and Sam, and if by some chance things between us don’t work, we’ll figure it out. Okay?”

“So you’re just frowning to make sure you haven’t forgotten how to?” she asks. I laugh, watching her smile. Damn, but I love her smile.

“No, just worried about Mav.” I curl my hands around her waist, then slide them back to draw her closer. It feels good to be able to touch her, to be touched by her after fighting this for so long.

“If she comes over to beat you up, you’re on your own.”

“That kid was a dick.”

“You’re also not allowed to call other people’s kids dicks, even if they are dicks.” She grins.

“I know he’s your friend, but if he ends up missing after tomorrow, I hope you will at least pretend you don’t know what happened to him.” I look up at Maverick. “I mean, not forever. I just need enough time to pack up my son and make it to Mexico.” I shake my head when he laughs. “I’m serious.”

“I know. That’s why I’m laughing.”

“I’m happy you find my annoyance comical.”

“Now, what about us getting married and me adopting Sam?” he asks, and my heart melts while tears leak from the corners of my eyes.

“You want to adopt Sam?”

“I want you and him both to have my last name,”

“I want you to move in with me,” he says. The panted statement catches me off guard, and I pull back so I can look into his eyes. “I know that we’re still new, but I hate it when you and Sam have to go back to your parents’, and even thinking about you two leaving tomorrow after his party is filling me with dread.”

“You being here is what I need. I don’t know what I would’ve done these last few weeks without you and Sam to keep me sane.” He turns me toward him and rests his forehead against mine. “I love you.” He leans in to touch my mouth with his, and Sam presses his face between ours, making us laugh.
