“I want to see the captain of the ship. You have no right to kidnap me,” I said in the deepest man voice I could muster. But my voice was cracked and I sounded like a puppy yapping.
“Shut up, man. We be the law right now. Capitan is sleeping and dreaming of men. Tell us who you be.”
“I was just visiting.”
“Visiting? Taking pictures at three o clock in the morning?”
“I couldn’t sleep.”
“You DEA slime.”
“No. No, I’m not DEA.”
“You wearing a wire?”
“No.”
“Take off your clothes, mon. Let us see.”
“Sir, I can assure you…”
My inquisitor nodded at the petrified remains of some poor unfortunate soul. I knew what he meant. I trembled and tears blinded me.
“Ah, mon scared.” Another sailor had my camera. He pushed buttons trying to see the pictures I had taken. He accidentally snapped a picture of himself. The flash startled him and he dropped the camera. The others laughed and slapped themselves. They chortled back and forth to one another in Spanish and French. I smiled and laughed also, in hopes that this humorous moment would relax them and make it easy for me. After a moment, I noticed I was the only one laughing. Their eyes had grown cold again.
