Work for as long as you can – and schedule additional decluttering sessions in the future if you need more time.
Once you have your desk cleared, you then need some simple systems in place to keep it that way. Have an in-box where all incoming paper automatically goes to get sorted. Keep a large trash bag handy so you can throw away lots of stuff. If you’re reluctant to throw something away because you just may need it sometime in the future, create a “Maybe” box and put that box into external storage which is out of sight. More than likely, you’ll find you never need to open that box again but if you do, you know where to find it.
Once you get your desk cleared so you can think straight, you then work outwards and get the rest of your work space decluttered. Create a distraction free zone where you can do some high quality thinking. To achieve this:
Find a place for everything you need so it’s not just lying around.
Get rid of posters, pictures and knickknacks. They’re fun
