Charlie Lawson is a Northern Irish actor best known for playing Jim McDonald in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. He has worked in television, film, and theatre for over forty years. In 2024, Lawson published his memoirs, That's Life, So It Is.
Quintin Charles Devenish Lawson was born in September 1959 in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. His father, Quintin Lawson, was a businessman and former Royal Air Force pilot. His mother, Muriel (née Glennie), was from Enniskillen. The family lived in Derryinch, near Devenish Island.
Charlie Lawson attended Campbell College in Belfast as a boarding student. He later trained as an actor at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. There, he became friends with fellow Northern Irish actor Adrian Dunbar.
Lawson's acting career began in the early 1980s. He played Seamus Duffryn in the 1982 miniseries Harry's Game and starred as Billy in Mike Leigh's Four Days in July. In 1989, he appeared as Trigg in The Firm. That same year, he joined Coronation Street as Jim McDonald. He remained a regular on the show for eleven years, later making guest appearances. He also appeared in The Bill, Doctors, Bread, My Mother, and Other Strangers during his career.
Outside of acting, Lawson has produced television documentaries. In 2000, he presented Passion for Peace, which examined the creation of the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Centre. In 2005, the actor appeared in Titanic: Birth of a Legend. In 2009, Lawson appeared in a German advert for hot dogs. In 2010, he returned to Coronation Street for its fiftieth anniversary. He reprised the role in 2014 and 2018.
